578 Squadron Asssociation Newsletters

578 Squadron was a close tight knit unit with a strong sense of camaraderie. Shortly after the ending of hostilities many of the air and ground personnel did not want to loose touch with each other and the 578 Squadron Association was formed, dating back to 1946 it ensured that they maintained contact with their friends and to remembered and commemorated those who did not return.

Over the years there have been over 170 Association newsletters sent out to veterans and their families wanting to keep in touch with their heritage. Many of the newsletters concern the day to day running of the association and its annual reunions but many, many articles are about the veterans time at RAF Burn and their experiences during wartime. They are of historical interest in themselves.

Therefore I am publishing as many of the newsletters as I have. I was not involved with the 578 Squadron Association until the 2000’s and so currently only have newsletters from 1998.

During 2001, 2002 with the numbers of veterans falling there was the consideration that the Association should be wound up. However a poll of veterans and their families resulted in a vote for its reorganisation and continuation. A name change to 578 Squadron Burn Association was made and also the newsletter was renamed the LK Times now edited by Hugh Cawdron and laterly by Emily Horton.

If anyone has old newsletters from the early days of the Association I would be happy to publish these.

A few points to note:
I apologise for the poor quality of some of the documents. These are scans of photocopies, they are from an era before digital publications.
Also they contents of these newsletters are the property of the 578 Squadron Association so although we are happy for you to use the contents for personal use. Commercial use must seek permission from the Association first.
Finally there will be names and addresses within these newsletters. Please do not attempt to make contact via these addresses. In the majority of cases the owners will have moved on. Please make any enquiries via the association. - Thank-you.
