578 Squadron Emblem

578 Squadron Crest

This emblem, which incorporates the maxim ‘Accuracy' was developed from the myth relating to a Greek archery competition in which the last but one to shoot an arrow hit the bull's eye. Determined to improve on this, the last archer split the previous arrow in half.

As a tribute to the consistent bombing accuracy of 578 Squadron, His Majesty King George V1 gave sanction to the design which had been approved by the Inspector of Air Force Badges and the College of Arms. It was adopted in March 1945, the month in which the Squadron stood down.
